Silk vs. Satin Pillowcases: What's the Difference?

Silk and satin get mixed up constantly, but they are not the same thing. Here is the short version.

Silk is a fiber

Mulberry silk comes from silkworm cocoons. It is a natural protein fiber, and it is what our pillowcases are made of: 100% mulberry silk.

Satin is a weave

Satin describes how threads are woven to create a shiny surface. Satin can be made from silk, but most satin pillowcases are made from polyester.

Why it matters for a pillowcase

  • Feel: silk is soft and breathable. Polyester satin can feel slick and warmer.
  • Weight: silk is measured in momme. Ours is 22 momme, heavier than the common 16 to 19.
  • Price: polyester satin is cheaper to make, which is why it is everywhere.

Which should you choose?

If you want a natural fiber that feels smooth and breathable, go with mulberry silk. If you are on a tight budget, satin gives you a smooth surface for less.
